What is Form 4868 All About?

File your tax extension online!

April 17th is the deadline to file your income tax return, but if you are not able to file the return by the deadline. What should you do? File an extension, of course.

You can automatically extend the April 17 due date to October 15 by filing Form 4868, “Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.” So now you have six more months to file your personalincome tax return.

The good thing about Form 4868 is that simply filing this form grants an automatic, no-questions-asked 6-month extension. You don’t have to have a reason. Just sending this form to the IRS on or before April 17 gets you the extra six months.
But here’s another important point about Form 4868: This 6-month extension is NOT an extension to pay any tax you may owe on the tax return. Form 4868 only grants an extension of time to file the tax return.
So, if you usually get a refund on your personal tax return, you are OK. But, if you think you might have a balance due, or if you are not sure, then you should go ahead and prepare the return to the best of your ability, do the calculations, and see where you stand.

If you are getting a refund, great!  If you’re not in a hurry to get the refund, then file theextension form and wait until October 15 to send in the return. But if you have a balance due on the return, then you should send in your balance due with Form 4868. That way you avoid any penalty and interest for late payment of tax.

When October 15 rolls around, you send in the return, showing the Form 4868 payment as a credit. The end result is this: you paid your tax on time (April 17), and you filed yourtax return legally late (October 15) because you filed the extension form on time.

Obviously, the key here is whether or not you have a balance due on your return. If you have a balance due, but don’t send in the payment with Form 4868, then you will have penalty and interest charges for paying the tax after April 15.Bottom line: Do not overlook the fact that Form 4868 does not grant you an extension of time to pay the tax. It only gives you an extension of time to file the return.

The easiest way to get additional time for filing your tax is now available!!

Take six additional months time (until October 15, 2012) to file your tax with no penalty by just filing extension form 4868. It is easy, safe and simple.

Use Form 4868 to request an automatic extension of time to file a U.S. individual income tax return. The extension will be granted if you properly estimate your tax liability using the information available to you. Enter your total tax liability on Form 4868, and file Form 4868 by the regular due date of your return (April 18th).

Although you are not required to make the full payment of the tax you estimate as due, Form 4868 does not extend the time to pay taxes. IRS extends tax filing deadline to April 17

The IRS is giving taxpayers two extra days to get their taxes turned in this year.

While Tax Day typically falls on April 15, the IRS announced Wednesday that it is pushing back this year’s filing deadline to Tuesday, April 17.

The extension was granted because April 15 falls on a Sunday this year, and Monday is Emancipation Day, a holiday in Washington D.C. that celebrates the freeing of slaves in the district. Last year, Tax Day was extended until April 18, also thanks to Emancipation Day.

Taxpayers requesting an extension will have until Oct. 15 to file their 2011 tax returns. The IRS said it expects to receive more than 144 million individual tax returns this year, with the majority projected to be submitted by the new April 17 deadline

Ten Tax Tips for Individuals Selling Their Home

The Internal Revenue Service has some important information to share with individuals who have sold or are about to sell their home. If you have a gain from the sale of your main home, you may qualify to exclude all or part of that gain from your income. Here are ten tips from the IRS to keep in mind when selling your home.

  • In general, you are eligible to exclude the gain from income if you have owned and used your home as your main home for two years out of the five years prior to the date of its sale.
  • If you have a gain from the sale of your main home, you may be able to exclude up to $250,000 of the gain from your income ($500,000 on a joint return in most cases).
